About Subjam

In 2011, volunteers grouped together to build a promotional website and streaming online radio player for their local scene, after the area’s only local music supporting radio station was taken over by a large media corporation. The success of SoCoRock caused its founding member to realize that what they had accomplished could be duplicated in other areas, giving any music scene fun tools to connect, promote, discover and support each other.

Cool Mic was the first incarnation of Subjam. The first Android version was a generalized live audio streaming app, as we were building a solid foundation before adding more features. When released in the Google Play store, however, users immediately started using it for many different purposes, including remote / on-the-street broadcasting stations for terrestrial radio.

We wanted to support these use-cases, so we forked the code and started working on Subjam. Founder Jordan Erickson has self-funded 99% of Subjam since then, including a fully owned and colocated back-end infrastructure, a released public beta for iOS and all of the time and work that it takes to bring a platform of this magnitude to the masses.

As this next phase of development emerges, there comes the realization that self-funding is no longer sustainable. If you want to support local music by helping us complete our next goals, please see our funding page.
